December 2001

Chassis

Four new valve cylinder liners have been delivered. These now need machining.

Vacuum and steam heat pipes were prepared for fitting.

Boiler

On the boiler, the last steam fountain stud is still proving difficult to remove.

The top panel has been cleaned and painted, and the ash pan door panels prepared for some replacement.

Tender

Work has been carried out on the internals of the tender, including the surge plates, water level indicator linkage, the buckled floor panel and cheek plates.

On the outside work continued on the side panels and lamp bracket.

A new brass tender water valve casting was delivered.

November 2001

Chassis

The coupling rods were taken away for final machining.

The live steam injector has also been taken away for completion off-site.

Tender

Work continued on the water baffle plates and finishing of the outside of the tender.

Chassis

The coupling rods have been taken away for final machining.

The fully machined live steam injector casting has been collected. The internal fittings will be made over the next few months.

Tender

New water baffle plates are being made. The steel angle plate for fitting the baffle plates has been delivered.

Chassis

Work continued on the coupling rods.

Work continued on the tender sides and fiddle strips.

August 2001

Chassis

Four coupling rods have been fitted to the engine.

Fitting the remaining coupling rods will require a small repositioning of the axles. This is currently being planned.

Tender

Work continued on the tender sides, cleaning up the rivets, cheek plates and pipe flanges.

July 2001

Chassis

Some coupling rod pins were manufactured. Coupling rod nuts were machined ready for the return of the coupling rods.

When the coupling rods arrived from Swindon, the front left was fitted and the front right started, but it became clear that this is going to be more of a job than expected.

Tender

The fiddle strip was completed. Some work was carried out on the hand rails.

Further riveting, grinding and welding was carried out. The riveting is now complete.

Six 8 x 4 sheets of steel were delivered. These are for plate work inside the tender. They were given a coat of metal primer.

June 2001

There was some general tidying up ready for the '50 Years of Railway Preservation' day move to the bay platform line at toddington.

Chassis

Work continued on the vacuum pump and cab floor.

The brake system received some attention.

Work continued on oil boxes and sand boxes.

Tender

Finally, after years of work, the welding of the inside tender fillet plates was completed. The inside of the tender tank is now fully refurbished and ready to have the water anti-surge plates assembled and fitted.

Work continued on the exterior of the tender plating and the fiddle strip is now complete.

Siphon

Some detail on the siphon roof was attended to.

May 2001

Chassis

Work continued on the coupling rod connecting joints.

A new steam heating pipe was made.

Boiler

32 foundation rivets were hammered out.

Tender

Work continued welding in fillet plates. The left side tank fillet plate welding was completed.

Two more runs of fiddle strip were fitted.

Siphon

The siphon roof was completed.

Diesel 5 Ton crane

Some work was carried out on the 5 ton crane with the 8F group.

April 2001

Chassis

Work continued on motion fittings. The coupling rods are at Swindon. The bearings have been re-white-metalled while the rest of the rods have been polished and painted. Presently we are awaiting the manufacture of one large brass bush required to complete one rod. When this is finished the rods will be re-united with the engine.

A new steam heating pipe is being manufactured.

Assembly of the front sandbox was completed and it was painted ready for fitting.

Boiler

Another 36 Foundation Rivets were hammered out on 7 April, almost breaking our record for removing the most in a day.

Tender

Work continued on the welding of fillet plates. Another length of fiddle strip was fitted.

A Kango hammer is being used to complete the riveting.

Two lamp brackets were fitted and various bits of tidying up completed

Siphon

The siphon roof has been repaired and new felt fitted.

March 2001

Chassis

At Swindon works a team of Belgian students are cleaning and painting the coupling rods. The completed rods are due back in April.

Both rear cylinder covers have been re-fitted.

The remaining front sand box has been completed.

Boiler

A new tool has speeded up rivet removal.

A smoke box puller has been designed, manufactured and fitted. When the smoke box has been removed from the chassis, this tool will assist in re-fitting the smoke box onto the boiler ready for re-fitting the boiler onto the chassis.

Tender

A full set of tender brake pipes were made.

Various welding and riveting work was completed.

Chassis

Further measurements in preparation for motion manufacture / refurbishment and fitting.

Boiler

Rivet removal continued.

Tender

Work continued tidying up the riveting and welding.

The wiring review has been completed and some machinery moved.

January 2001

Chassis

Work continued on the examination and cleaning of the crank pins.

The coupling rods were taken to Swindon for refurbishment and white metalling.

Boiler

Work continued on the boiler to remove the back head studs.

The smokebox tubeplate was taken to Swindon for use as a pattern for manufacture of a new plate.

Tender

Some of the tender leaf springs have been removed and cleaned. They will then be re-assembled and tensioned to level the tender. Parts were manufactured for the tender sides.

On 27 January, a riveting team was hired for the day to tackle the tender side panels. This involved removing the nuts and bolts, in a strict sequence so that the panels were still held together for riveting, re-drilling the holes to the correct size, and then riveting the plates together. At the same time, various bits of welding were completed on the tender.
